Come on, Square. Help me help you! Final Fantasy is the flagship of this whole shebang
Dude, you would imagine that a company that has lived off Final Fantasy for 15 numbered entries (not counting spin-offs) would understand that nostalgia and the franchise’s history are what hold us in the series’ most doubtful moments. Well, on August 24, 2021, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy IV, the Pixel Remaster version, comes out on September 8. For Steam and mobile. That’s it.
Let me explain the tantrum. The Pixel Remaster collection was announced at E3 2021 and remakes the first six Final Fantasy games, released between 1987 and 1994 on the NES and the Super Nintendo. It has rearranged music supervised by Nobuo Uematsu himself, sprites redrawn by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist, a new interface, an illustration gallery by Yoshitaka Amano and a bestiary. The first three came out on July 28, IV arrives now in September, and V and VI were left for later. Lovely on paper. But consoles? Nothing. Not even the Switch, which I don’t even own.
And on top of that, Square pulled the old mobile and Steam versions of I, II, V and VI from digital stores on the day the remasters arrived. In other words: want to play officially on PC? It’s the Pixel Remaster or nothing.
As if that were not enough, the father of the series himself, Hironobu Sakaguchi, released Fantasian in 2021, a Mistwalker RPG exclusive to Apple Arcade. Those without an Apple device were left watching from afar too.
If you thought my attack was exaggerated, don’t go looking up what people are saying about the English text font and some touch-ups to the pixels. Seriously. Pal’s tip.
What came next
V came out in November 2021 and VI in February 2022. Critics generally liked it: they praised the presentation and the remade soundtrack and complained about technical problems at launch, that font, and the lack of the extra content from the Game Boy Advance versions. And consoles? Only on April 19, 2023, on PlayStation 4 and Switch, for the franchise’s 35th anniversary, already with an optional pixel font, switchable original soundtrack and experience multipliers. On Xbox, only in September 2024. It took a while, but Square listened. Combined, sales reached six million units by December 2025.
