Come with me, because today’s trailer is about leaping from building to building: on August 24, 2021, during Xbox’s Gamescom presentation, Techland showed a new gameplay trailer for Dying Light 2 Stay Human, called “Decide the Fate of the City”. The video gives an overview of what to expect, with combat, exploration and plenty of parkour.

The story takes place 22 years after the first Dying Light. A more aggressive variant of the virus escaped from a lab and caused a second pandemic, which turned millions of people into monsters. Fifteen years after that collapse, humanity lives in a few scattered settlements, and one of the biggest is Villedor, a walled European city. That is where Aiden Caldwell goes, a Pilgrim, the name given to those brave enough to travel between settlements, in search of his lost sister, Mia.

What gets my little gamer heart excited is the movement. Aiden climbs, slides, leaps from ledges and runs along walls, with more than 3,000 parkour animations, plus a grappling hook and a paraglider to cross the city. Combat is mostly melee, with weapons that wear out with use, and there are also crossbows and spears. And the part that gives the trailer its name: the city’s factions fight for control of Villedor, and the player’s decisions change the map itself and how characters treat Aiden.

At the time, launch was set for December 7, 2021, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

What came next

The December date did not hold, and Dying Light 2 Stay Human arrived on February 4, 2022. Reception was favorable, with praise for the combat, parkour and open world, and criticism of the story. The game sold 5 million units in its first month, a very nice result for Techland.
