Some expansions win you over with their story, and The Witch Queen arrived promising exactly that. On August 24, 2021, Bungie revealed the new major Destiny 2 expansion, set for February 22, 2022 on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Google Stadia, and showed two trailers.
The first is the reveal trailer, which introduces the year’s villain:
The expansion revolves around Savathûn, the Witch Queen, sister of Oryx, the villain of The Taken King expansion in the first Destiny. She stole the Light, the power that gives Guardians their abilities, and created a Hive capable of using those same powers. What stands out is the inversion: Hive enemies with the same Light powers that have always been the players’. To hunt her, Guardians invade Savathûn’s Throne World, a new destination above Mars, in the Ascendant Plane.
The second video focuses on gameplay:
The Witch Queen was planned for the end of 2021, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic Bungie delayed the launch by three months, to February. It was the game’s sixth expansion and marked the fifth year of Destiny 2 content.
What came next
The expansion came out on February 22, 2022, with more than 1 million pre-orders, and received generally favorable reviews. A nice detail for those who like building their own gear: it brought weapon crafting, in which the player obtains existing weapon patterns and builds their own versions with the perks they prefer. The new raid, Vow of the Disciple, arrived on March 5, 2022. Over the year came four seasons, from Season of the Risen to Season of the Seraph, until the next expansion, Lightfall, arrived on February 28, 2023.
