On July 26, 2021, Warner Bros. Games announced that Mortal Kombat 11 had passed 12 million units sold worldwide. NetherRealm Studios’ game, released in April 2019, was described by the publisher as the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history.

The figure for the whole series also drew attention. Since the first Mortal Kombat, from 1992, the franchise had totaled more than 73 million units sold on consoles, not counting Mortal Kombat Mobile, which had 138 million installs. Over those nearly three decades, the series has also spawned three theatrical films, animated features and several TV series. Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm and one of the creators of the original game, commented on the milestone: “When Mortal Kombat launched almost 30 years ago, I never dreamed it would grow into the franchise it is today.”

Mortal Kombat 11 came out on April 23, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, and topped software sales in North America in April and May of that year. Then came two Kombat Packs with extra fighters, including guests such as Spawn, RoboCop and John Rambo, the latter with the voice and likeness of Sylvester Stallone, plus the Aftermath story expansion in May 2020. In November 2020 came Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, with all the additional content together and versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game also won Fighting Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards and was named the best fighting game of 2019 by IGN.

What came next

Sales kept climbing: by 2022, Mortal Kombat 11 had passed 15 million copies, becoming the best-selling game in the franchise. The sequel came in September 2023 with Mortal Kombat 1, which rebooted the series’ timeline. For fighting fans, MK11 remains a landmark chapter, with a customizable variations system and a story mode praised by critics.
