The Game Awards on December 10, 2020 brought a surprise with dinosaurs and a famous bald head: Studio Wildcard announced Ark 2, the sequel to Ark: Survival Evolved, starring Vin Diesel, the Dominic Toretto of Fast & Furious. The game was confirmed for PC and, on consoles, as an Xbox Series X|S exclusive, as Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg highlighted:
Check out the trailer:
Ark: Survival Evolved, from 2017, is a survival game in which the player is stranded on maps full of dinosaurs, fantastic creatures, natural hazards and other players who are not always friendly. You can tame the beasts, ride them and build bases, alone or in tribes on the servers. What stands out in the sequel is the change in tone: instead of a generic survivor, Ark 2 has a protagonist with a face and a voice, played by Vin Diesel, with actress Auliʻi Cravalho also in the cast.
The same night, Studio Wildcard announced an animated Ark series, with a heavyweight cast: Michelle Yeoh, Gerard Butler, David Tennant, Elliot Page, Karl Urban, Russell Crowe and Vin Diesel himself, among others. You can see the care in turning the series into a brand bigger than the game.
What came next
The animated series premiered on Paramount+ on March 21, 2024. The game, on the other hand, took much longer. Ark 2 moved to Unreal Engine 5, instead of the first game’s Unreal Engine 4, gained a soulslike combat system and is now co-developed with Grove Street Games. The initial target was 2023; it later moved to late 2024. In June 2025, Studio Wildcard said it expected early access no earlier than 2027. Meanwhile, the studio released Ark: Survival Ascended in 2023, a remaster of the original on Unreal Engine 5.
