On December 10, 2020, Epic Games announced the return of its year-end sale. The Epic Games Store Holiday Sale would begin on December 17, with discounts of up to 75% and a novelty that drew attention: 15 straight days of free games, one new title per day.

The rule was simple. Each game would be available to claim for only 24 hours, but once claimed, it became part of the account’s library forever, at no cost. Whoever missed the day missed the game. Epic did not reveal the list in advance: each gift was discovered on the spot, which kept players coming back to the store daily. The first, released on the 17th, was Cities: Skylines, the city-building simulator from Colossal Order. Epic also reminded players that they could claim the games from a mobile browser and download them on PC later.

Besides the free games, the sale brought US$ 10 coupons. The first was released upon logging into your account and clicking the campaign button. With each eligible purchase of titles starting at US$ 14.99, the player earned another coupon, and the coupons were valid until January 7, 2021. Games on sale included Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Immortals Fenyx Rising, SnowRunner and Watch Dogs: Legion.

The week before, the store was also giving away Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity: Definitive Edition for free, until the 17th itself.

What came next

In its 2020 year-in-review, published at the end of January 2021, Epic reported reaching 160 million players. In January 2021 came Star Wars Battlefront II: Celebration Edition, claimed by more than 19 million people.
