On October 22, 2020, Warner Play, the Brazilian channel of Warner Bros. Games, published a trailer fully dubbed in Portuguese showing John Rambo in action in Mortal Kombat 11. It was the first good look at the fighting style of the guest character, who would join the game as part of Kombat Pack 2.
The pack had been revealed on October 8, after a teaser published two days earlier. It had three fighters: Mileena, who hadn’t been a playable character since Mortal Kombat X and returned at the fans’ request; Rain, last playable as DLC in the 2011 reboot; and Rambo, the pack’s guest. In the original English version, Sylvester Stallone himself lent his voice and likeness to the character. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he recorded his lines at home, in video calls with the NetherRealm team.
Rambo wasn’t the first 1980s movie character to enter the tournament. The first Kombat Pack had already brought the T-800 from The Terminator, as well as the Joker, and Mortal Kombat 11 had been making guests a tradition. Calmly put, a fighter is known by what they show in motion, and that is what the trailer offered: the first chance to observe Rambo’s rhythm, reach and tools before taking him into the arena. For those who like to study a new character, it’s the kind of video worth rewatching patiently.
Kombat Pack 2 and all previous downloadable content came included in Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate, the complete edition scheduled for November 17, 2020 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
What came next
Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate came out on 17 November 2020, and on 24 November a skin pack based on the 1995 film arrived too. In July 2021, NetherRealm ended support with new DLC to focus on its next projects. By 2022, Mortal Kombat 11 had passed 15 million copies sold, the best-selling game in the franchise.
