Joakim “Konjak” Sandberg is a well-known indie game maker in the indie mainstream. In fact, independent is the word that defines him: all of his projects were made by himself, with no third parties involved. You may have heard of him, since his new game, Iconoclasts, is available on all current platforms (PC, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft).
Iconoclasts is a really cool game, but Konjak also made some pretty cool games before it. It is like liking a famous band and discovering that before fame it was already making other really awesome sounds.
NOITU LOVE
The year is 2188. The city is protected by an organization called “The Peacekeepers League” and everything is going well until a legion of military robots led by Professor Darnacus Damnation shows up. It is then up to the leader of the Peacekeepers to exterminate these robots and teach this Darnacus Damnation a lesson.
GAMEPLAY
Noitu Love is a classic game, with all that 8-bit Nintendinho look. It is the kind of game I particularly like, because you use only two commands besides movement: jump and attack. And do not think the mission will be easy, because this game’s difficulty level borders on the impossible, making many people lose some hair, along with their patience.
NOITU LOVE 2: DEVOLUTION
100 years after the events of Noitu Love 1, Xoda Rap, the Peacekeepers’ new heroine, sees Professor Darnacus Damnation’s army resurface, and the danger is now temporal: he is sending everything back to the past! But how? That is what you will find out and try to stop!
GAMEPLAY
Noitu Love 2 is a masterpiece. Having 100% pixel art graphics and that pleasant atmosphere of playing a Super Nintendo like in the old days make this game an example of everything Multimedia Fusion 2 is capable of. On top of this, we have a consistent plot and innovative, original and challenging gameplay. And of course, the difficulty level is “Cuphead,” “Battletoads,” “Contra”… (I could not find an adjective that tops the hard level, besides these).
TRIVIA
In April 2010, Noitu Love 2 was announced as a port for the Nintendo Wii, in collaboration with Golgoth Studio. The problem was that after that nothing more was heard, and since June 4, 2011 there has been no news about Golgoth Studio. However, the game has been available on Steam since April 2012.
LEGEND OF PRINCESS
“Legend of Princess” is a parody of the acclaimed “The Legend of Zelda.” From the protagonist to the items and elements in the scenery, the whole game was made with all the love only a fan could have. The art, the gameplay, the soundtrack are all simply perfect, the kind that is a pleasure to see, hear and play!
If anyone out there still has not played Iconoclasts – you don’t know what you’re missing -, it is well worth getting to know the work of its creator, Konjak. On the guy’s site there are several other unfinished games, or just the basic concept (like Ivory Springs, an Iconoclasts concept). The game is multiplatform, and is already available to players all over the world!
