Come along, because this news has a whiff of going back to the roots: in April 2018, a user on the ResetEra forum discovered that Capcom had filed new trademark registrations for Onimusha in several regions, with applications dated April 3. For those who keep the series close to their hearts, it was quite a sign.
Onimusha is that classic action series with samurai and demons that debuted on the PlayStation 2. The first game, Onimusha: Warlords, came out in Japan on January 25, 2001, directed by Jun Takeuchi and produced by Keiji Inafune, and was the first PS2 game to pass one million copies sold. Then came Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, from 2006, plus a few spin-offs. Since then, the series had been quiet, sleeping.
With the wave of remakes, remasters and collections of that period, the question was inevitable: was something new coming, or was Capcom just renewing paperwork, as companies routinely do to protect their brands?
Another detail kept fans dreaming. In early 2018, the president of Bluepoint Games, a studio known for collections such as the Uncharted and God of War ones and for the Shadow of the Colossus remake, told Digital Trends that the team was working on a remake “as big as Shadow of the Colossus,” without saying which. Many people put the two together, but there was never a confirmed link between them.
What came next
How sweet when the hunch pays off: Capcom released the Onimusha: Warlords remaster for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC on January 15, 2019 (in Japan, on December 20, 2018), with high-definition graphics, widescreen, a full 3D movement option and a re-recorded soundtrack. And the series finally got a new game: Onimusha: Way of the Sword came out on September 4, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, and sold 1 million copies on launch day alone.
