Soulcalibur VI, planned for 2018 but still without a confirmed date, revealed two more fighters from its roster in February 2018: Ivy and Zasalamel. Bandai Namco published a gameplay trailer for each, and neither went through a drastic visual change, so fans of the series will feel at home.
Ivy is a constant presence in the series and a fan favorite, thanks to her sword that turns into a whip, the famous Ivy Blade. She can fight up close as a swordswoman or step back and control distance with the whip, which gives her a very particular style. Zasalamel debuted in Soulcalibur III, in 2005, and fights with an enormous scythe, a long-range weapon that demands patience to control space.
It has been a while since I followed the series closely, but the gameplay of the two reminded me quite a bit of the combat style of NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat games, especially in the weight of the hits and the way the sequences fit together.

For context: Soulcalibur VI was announced at The Game Awards in December 2017. It is the first main series game since Soulcalibur V, from 2012, and is set in the 16th century, revisiting the events of the first Soulcalibur, from 1998. It runs on Unreal Engine 4, the same as Tekken 7, and brought in Geralt, from The Witcher, as a guest.
What came next
Soulcalibur VI was released on October 19, 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, via Steam. Ivy and Zasalamel were on the launch roster. The game received character seasons through DLC in the following years and, as of July 2021, sales had passed 2 million copies worldwide, a good result for a series that had been idle for six years.
