Come along, because this news squeezed my little gamer heart a bit: on the January 30, 2018 earnings call, Electronic Arts confirmed that Anthem, BioWare’s multiplayer action game, would no longer come out in 2018. The new window became early 2019, on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
The curious thing is that the company did not want to call it a delay. EA’s chief financial officer, Blake Jorgensen, told the Wall Street Journal: “It’s not a delay.” The official explanation was about the calendar: releasing the game in a quarter with less competition and not splitting attention with the new Battlefield, which EA announced in the same conversation with investors for October 2018.
Anthem had been revealed in June 2017, at EA’s conference before E3, and charmed with the idea of flying through an open world with the Javelins, armors that work as flight suits, in a cooperative adventure for up to four friends. Check out how cute a promise that was: the studio of Mass Effect and Dragon Age in a jetpack shooter.
Not everyone bought the calendar version, you know? At the time, Kotaku pointed out the delay also had to do with development problems.
What came next
Anthem arrived on February 22, 2019 and received mixed reviews, with Metacritic scores between 54 and 65: the flight and combat were praised, but the endgame content, repetition and technical problems weighed it down. A Kotaku report, with anonymous BioWare developers, revealed that most of the game was made in the final year before launch. BioWare even planned a major overhaul, but ended development in February 2021. The servers were shut down on January 12, 2026, and the game stopped working officially. Sniff.
