Some champions come through the front door, and some arrive as the 55th seed and leave with the trophy: that was the case of Briton Donovan “DhTekKz” Hunt, 16, who won the FIFA 18 FUT Champions Cup in Barcelona, held from January 26 to 28, 2018.
What stands out is the size of the upset. It was the kid’s first major in-person tournament, and the Barcelona FUT Champions Cup was also the first event of the EA Sports FIFA 18 Global Series, the circuit that led to the FIFA eWorld Cup, the official World Cup. There were 128 players, 64 on PlayStation 4 and 64 on Xbox One, each console with its own bracket.
DhTekKz played on Xbox One. Along the way, he eliminated well-known names like Vitality Rocky and, in the grand final, faced Argentine Nicolas “nicolas99fc” Villalba, the PS4 bracket champion. The Briton won the first leg 3-2 and steamrolled the second 6-1, closing 9-3 on aggregate. The prize was 22 thousand dollars.
A nice detail: the Swiss format adopted in the season opened space for lesser-known players, and the result showed that in practice. The top eight on each console secured a spot in the Global Series playoffs, scheduled for June 2018, the next step toward the World Cup.
The full broadcast of the final was recorded in the video below.
What came next
The FIFA eWorld Cup 2018 took place at The O2 arena in London and ended on August 4 with the title going to Saudi Arabia’s Mosaad Aldossary, who beat Stefano “StefanoPinna” Pinna 4-0 on aggregate and took home 250 thousand dollars.
