Anyone who grew up in front of the TV watching old Sunday morning cartoons got Cuphead right away. And, in November 2017, a little over a month after launch, came the question everybody was asking at the counter: will there be more? In an interview with IGN, Jared Moldenhauer, co-founder of Studio MDHR, answered bluntly: “You’re guaranteed to see Cuphead again at some point.”
An adjustment to what we published at the time is in order: it was not a confirmed sequel. Moldenhauer would not say whether it would be a second game, an expansion or something else, and added that, about the studio’s next steps, “there has been no time at all to breathe or think.”
The rush is understandable. Cuphead arrived on September 29, 2017 on PC and Xbox One and passed one million copies sold in its first two weeks. The Canadian studio, founded by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, drew everything by hand, in the style of 1930s cartoons, with a live-recorded jazz soundtrack. Behind the old-cartoon look, a boss-fight game made to make players sweat, the kind that recalls afternoons lost trying to beat a hard cartridge borrowed from the neighbor. At the end of 2017, it won three awards at The Game Awards: art direction, independent game and independent debut.
What came next
The promise was kept bit by bit. The game reached Mac in 2018, Switch in April 2019 and PS4 in July 2020, by which point it had 6 million copies. The Delicious Last Course expansion was announced at E3 2018, suffered delays and only came out on June 30, 2022, with new bosses and a playable Ms. Chalice. That same year, in February, the animated series The Cuphead Show! premiered on Netflix.
And the full answer came almost nine years after the interview: at Summer Game Fest in June 2026, Studio MDHR announced a Cuphead sequel, still untitled, and Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit platformer coming to the Sega Master System, as well as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.
