Numbers first: two new heroes, two maps, two modes and a free weekend. In November 2017, Ubisoft presented the fourth season of For Honor, called Order & Havoc, set to launch on November 14 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
The heroes are Aramusha, a masterless, ronin-style samurai of the hybrid class who fights with two katanas, and Shaman, a fast assassin of the Viking faction armed with a hatchet and a dagger. In practice, access worked in two stages: Season Pass holders unlocked both on November 14; other players could unlock them from November 21, for 15,000 Steel, the in-game currency.
The maps, free for everyone, were Market Town, a samurai village full of narrow alleys, elevation changes and ziplines, and The Gauntlet, the Viking capital, a fortress up high surrounded by walls.
The new mode, Tribute, is 4 vs 4 and revolves around objectives: teams fight over three offerings scattered around the map and must carry them to their shrines. Translating the jargon: each occupied shrine activates a different bonus for the team, so holding on to the offerings is worth more than just winning exchanges of blows. The season also brought ranked Dominion, with a competitive ranking system and in-game rewards.
To attract newcomers, Ubisoft opened the base game for free between November 9 and 12, 2017, with the 16 heroes already released, all multiplayer modes and the full campaign, solo or co-op. A clarification is worth making: what was free was the game’s trial weekend, not the season.
What came next
In October 2018, the Marching Fire expansion added the Chinese-inspired Wu Lin faction to the game. No servers were harmed in the making of this paragraph.
