COLOPL has launched Tsukuyomi: The Divine Hunter worldwide, a card roguelike with creative direction by Kazuma Kaneko, who worked at ATLUS since 1988 and played a central role in creating Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. Kaneko joined COLOPL in 2023 to lead the project.

The numbers and systems

  • Platforms: iOS, Android and Steam, with shared saves across them.
  • Setting: THE HASHIRA, a towering apartment building in Tokyo’s port area overrun by monsters. You are an agent of the Tsukuyomi organization and must eliminate the antagonist Noriko Tomi.
  • Characters at launch: Izayoi (standard style, with reinforced attack and defense cards) and Shingetsu (chain attacks and more moves). Mangetsu and Hangetsu arrive in updates.
  • Turn-based battles, with randomly dealt cards.

The technical highlight is the Okami system, which uses an AI dubbed “AI Kaneko” to generate original cards from the choices made while exploring the floors. If you lose, the card goes away, but it stays registered and can be obtained again.

Translating the jargon

In practice, this means generative AI used as a core mechanic, and not just as a behind-the-scenes tool, in a project with Kaneko himself at the helm. Whether the cards will have the personality of the classic demons he drew, you’ll only know by playing; the name on the box, at least, already helps calibrate expectations.

Hardware, PC and performance

Doutor Overclock claims a PhD in thermal dissipation; the diploma, curiously, has never left the lab. He covers hardware, PC requirements, performance patches and upscalers, and turns spec sheets into plain English. He apologizes in advance for the dry joke in the third paragraph.
