Anyone who rented Starship Troopers on VHS at the video store in the late 90s remembers it well: giant bugs, Morita rifles and Federation propaganda at every corner. Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film, based on the book by Robert A. Heinlein, keeps giving, and Starship Troopers: Extermination is the proof. Offworld, in partnership with Knights Peak, has detailed two game updates, 1.4 and 1.5.
Update 1.4
Coming right after 1.3, 1.4 brings:
- FedNet Heroism: FedNet cameras record heroic deeds on the battlefield, which raises unit morale and earns more XP. Very much in the spirit of the film’s newscasts.
- Morita MK1 attachment: players who reached Mastery level 6 or higher with the weapon can equip an under-barrel attachment. The extra weight changes the balance and slightly reduces accuracy when shooting on the move.
- Smarter bugs: the arachnids’ pathing has been improved, and they stop getting stuck in the scenery.
- Quality-of-life and balance adjustments to the core mechanics.
Update 1.5
1.5 follows, with bigger additions:
- Morita MK2, a new weapon that appears briefly in the films.
- Galactic Front, phase 1: Company Operations become more accessible and are no longer purchased. They now appear in a rotating list in the menu, tied to the player’s progression milestones, and get a Quick Play option.
- Dynamic sky on planet X-11, a new visual layer that should keep being refined.
- 16-player Hive Hunt: the mode becomes exclusive to 16 players, who must carry and detonate nuclear bombs in each hive, protecting the one carrying the payload.
According to Offworld, this is only the first part of a larger Hive Hunt overhaul.
About the game
Starship Troopers: Extermination is a cooperative shooter in which players join the Deep Space Vanguard and face hordes of arachnids on hostile planets. It debuted in early access on May 17, 2023 and was officially released in October 2024 for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store and Offworld Shop), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Steam page lists a Brazilian Portuguese interface.
Almost thirty years after the film, the crew keeps answering the same call. Service guarantees citizenship, as the Federation would say.
