Listen up: a roguelike card game is usually something you think through calmly, one turn at a time. Break Siege arrives with a bang precisely to put an end to that softness. The game from the independent team FojoGames, published by Edigger, entered Steam early access at 11 p.m. Pacific time on May 7, which is 3 a.m. on May 8 in Brasília time.

Real-time cards

The big idea is that enemies don’t wait for your turn. They are aggressive, move all the time and keep appearing, so reflexes and strategy go hand in hand. Choosing well where to spend resources and which target to attack first is what separates victory from disaster. A small hesitation can become a big problem.

The train is your deck

Each train has its own mechanics and a specialized set of cards. As you progress, stronger cards are unlocked, opening room for many combinations and play styles. New cards come from battle rewards, the shop or random item searches.

The train is also upgraded over the course of a run: you can generate more energy, install cars with turrets and so on. In research centers, special train projects appear to customize the locomotive, and each car brings a bonus.

Every run is different

Runs are procedurally generated, with random events that change the path, and the player’s choices lead to different outcomes. You can also recruit a varied team of mercenaries to reinforce the adventure. In the Steam description, the mission is to break through the Empire’s forces in intense battles.

Who it’s for

For those who like roguelike deckbuilders but miss adrenaline, it’s guaranteed drama. The look is pixel art, and the Steam page lists Brazilian Portuguese support, a plus for the folks here. The early access launch came with a discount valid for 14 days.

The official trailer is on YouTube, and the community gathers on the game’s official Discord. Let’s test whether you can handle playing cards while the train is on fire.
