Check this out: Devolver Digital, the publisher that loves weird games in the best sense, presented BOTSU, from developer Peculiar Pixels. It is a collection of robot battle sports with ragdoll physics and zero commitment to the athletes’ dignity. The game is coming to PC and the demo is already on Steam.
Three modes, none of them calm
BOX-BALL is a mix of soccer, basketball, volleyball and a “legally distinct” magical sport. Anyone who played or read a certain wizard saga will get the joke. The goal is to score with hydraulic precision, but holding the ball for too long is asking to take a hit.
STOCKPILE is pure theft: the team has to take the opponent’s stockpile using any method necessary. Robotic domination is the goal.
SUMO SURVIVAL is lava-floor drama. The rule is to survive and play dirty to be the champion, because there no move is forbidden.
Online and on the couch
You can play online with up to eight people, in 4v4 matches, or call the crew to the couch and play in split screen with up to four players. For those who like party games, this detail makes all the difference: wacky physics is much more fun when the friend who messed up is sitting next to you.
Your robot, your rules
Each player creates their own robot athlete, with upgrades and customization options. Between matches, there is a social space where you can meet other players, take part in minigames and improve your robot.
Let’s test it
Devolver hasn’t set a date yet, only the PC launch window “later this year”. In the meantime, the demo on the Steam page is the way to feel the chaos firsthand. The official description sums up the proposal well: compete online or in split screen in physics-based battle sports to prove your mechanical worth.
Given Devolver’s track record, the least you can expect is a lot of well-made mess. And robots flying face-first into the ground, of course.
