I remember when dying in a video game meant going back to the first level and swallowing your tears. Void Scout, from Adversity Games and published by indie.io, has a more generous idea: if recruit Alyssa falls, another Alyssa from a parallel reality takes her place in the fight to save the multiverse.
The sci-fi horror roguelike with turn-based combat arrives on Steam on June 2, during #TurnBasedThursdayFest. Alyssa counts on the AI Malakai and the ship Void Cutter to face interdimensional horrors on galactic missions.
Progress that stays
On each mission, she keeps weapons, nanotech upgrades and information about the enemies. A “Director” system adjusts the difficulty of procedurally generated missions, tweaking enemies, items and random events. Opponents vary in size, attack and behavior, and the environment can be used to your advantage.
“Void Scout came from a simple idea: what if your choices mattered more than your numbers, and death was not the end but part of the journey?”, says Joseph Norris, who founded Adversity Games in 2021. It is the studio’s first video game.
Our take
A difficulty “Director” brings back memories of Left 4 Dead nights, and the swap of Alyssas gives the old die-and-restart loop the air of a story told around a campfire. Worth keeping an eye on.
