Warner Bros. Discovery and New Line are developing new films set in the universe of The Lord of the Rings. According to THR, the media conglomerate signed a multi-year deal with Embracer Group AB, which holds the rights to the works of J. R. R. Tolkien.
The first result of the partnership will be an animated film about the War of the Rohirrim. The movie is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and will tell the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand and the legendary King of Rohan. The animated film is scheduled to premiere on April 12, 2024.
It is not clear which other stories Warner wants to adapt, but the plan is to keep the essence of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
“Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to bring the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. The result was a historic series of films that were embraced by generations of fans. The opportunity to invite fans to delve deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure”, Warner representatives said in a statement.
Embracer bought the rights that had belonged since the 1970s to The Saul Zaentz Company, becoming the new owner of the division known as Middle-earth Enterprises. The subsidiary is responsible for negotiating adaptation rights with the various media companies interested.
