New update for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles makes them compatible with Bluetooth audio!

Out of the blue, update 13.0.0, arriving on Nintendo Switch family systems on September 14, 2021, enables the option to connect Bluetooth audio devices.

According to the update notes: earbuds, headphones, speakers and other audio devices can be paired and used with the console, limited only by the compatibility of the device itself.

The notes stress that microphones are not supported and that the option is not available while the console is connected in local wireless, the pairing system between physically nearby consoles (for trading Pokémon or local multiplayer, for example).

The update also brings some changes to accommodate the new Nintendo Switch OLED, the option to keep the Internet connection active while the console is in sleep mode, and improvements to analog stick calibration.

Countless devices have been released over the years to make this feature viable. With the update for native support, these devices will no longer be needed.

All the details of the update can be read on the console’s Official Changelog Page.
