Listen up: a year after blowing up online with its first video, Black Myth: Wukong came back in full force. On August 19, 2021, Chinese studio Game Science released, in partnership with NVIDIA, a 12-minute, 45-second trailer with gameplay, story, cutscenes and plenty of combat, all captured on GeForce RTX cards, already in Unreal Engine 5 and with DLSS on.

For newcomers: Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG inspired by Journey to the West, the classic of Chinese literature that tells the journey of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. In the game, you control the Destined One, a monkey who fights with a staff and goes after six relics tied to Wukong’s six senses. The video gave a much better idea of how combat works and showed several of the Chinese folklore creatures the player faces along the way.

The game’s story is one that arrives with a bang. Game Science revealed Wukong on August 20, 2020, with a video of a pre-alpha version, still in Unreal Engine 4, posted straight to social media with no notice to the press. In one day, it got nearly 2 million views on YouTube and 10 million on Bilibili. The idea was to attract talent, and it worked: more than 10,000 people applied. In 2021, the studio switched the engine to Unreal Engine 5, and that is what this August trailer showed.

For those who want to follow closely, the game’s official website gathers the news.

What came next

Black Myth: Wukong was released on August 20, 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC, and reached Xbox Series X|S exactly a year later, on August 20, 2025. It was a phenomenon: it sold 20 million units in the first month, made the list of the fastest-selling games in history and won several Game of the Year awards. The next installment in the series, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, is already in development.
