Come along, there is a new trailer for a very well-crafted RPG: in August 2021, Atlus released the “Bethel” story trailer for Shin Megami Tensei V, three months before launch. The video shows a demonic conflict forming in Tokyo, with new enemies and combat scenes.

Bethel is the name of an organization that brings together divine beings from various mythologies and human agents from around the world. Its mission is to protect the real world from the influence of Da’at, a post-apocalyptic setting that was once an alternate version of Tokyo, destroyed in the war between the angels, loyal to the Creator, and the demons, loyal to Lucifer. Before the game begins, Lucifer kills the Creator, and other deities start fighting over the Throne of Creation.

The protagonist is a high school student who ends up in Da’at and, by fusing with Aogami, becomes the Nahobino, a half-human, half-demon being. The characters around him represent the series’ moral paths: Ichiro Dazai, Law; Yuzuru Atsuta, a Bethel agent, Chaos; and Shohei Yakumo, with the demon Nüwa, Neutrality. The choices define which of the endings the player will see.

In gameplay, the cuteness comes from the recruitable demons. You can talk to them during battle, answer their questions according to each one’s personality and convince them to join the party, and also fuse demons to create stronger ones. Battles are turn-based and reward those who exploit enemy weaknesses.

At the time, the launch was set for November 11, 2021 in Japan and November 12 in the West, as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

What came next

The game sold more than 1.1 million units by 2022. Critics praised the gameplay and visuals, with reservations about the story and performance. In 2024 came Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, an expanded version for other consoles and PC, with a new story route, which was very well received.
