Genshin Impact was less than three months old when miHoYo revealed, on December 11, 2020, its second major update. Version 1.2, named The Chalk Prince and the Dragon, was set for December 23 and brought two new characters and the first new region since the game’s launch on September 28 that year.

The region is Dragonspine, a huge snow-covered mountain where the remains of the poisonous dragon Durin lie, who fell there after fighting Dvalin. Anyone who lived through the cartridge-RPG era remembers the icy mountains that called for warm clothes and a campfire; here the idea is similar, with deep snow, extreme cold, the dragon’s poisonous blood and monsters along the way.

The new characters were Albedo, five-star, Geo element and sword, and Ganyu, five-star, Cryo element and bow. Albedo appeared on the update’s first banner, from December 23, and Ganyu on the second, from January 12, 2021.

The update also brought weapons such as Summit Shaper and Dragonspine Spear, the artifact sets Blizzard Strayer and Heart of Depth, the Frostbearing Tree, the Peak of Vindagnyr domain, new world quests and ice enemies. On the system side, private chat with friends, the Travel Journal with already completed quests and the Kamera camera for taking photos in the game arrived.

What came next

Genshin Impact kept getting updates every few weeks, in the games-as-a-service model, free-to-play with gacha monetization. The native PlayStation 5 version came out on April 28, 2021, and the game reached Xbox Series X|S in 2024. In April 2026, PlayStation 4 support ended.
