Come along, because this is one of those news items that give you butterflies: on October 28, 2020, a few weeks before the arrival of the PlayStation 5, Sony presented the console’s global launch commercial. The video reached Brazil through the PlayStation Brasil channel with the title “Jogar não tem limites”, the Portuguese version of the slogan “Play Has No Limits”.

The one who presented the piece on the PlayStation Blog was Eric Lempel, senior vice president and head of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment. According to him, the launch of each new PlayStation is a special moment, and the goal was to create an “epic and iconic” commercial that celebrated the desire to go beyond what seems possible.

The chosen theme was exploration. The commercial pays homage to explorers of the past, who stopped before the unknown and went beyond their own limits, and ties that idea to everyone’s desire to visit places they’ve never been and see what nobody has seen. How lovely, right? For the narration of the original version, Sony chose the rapper Travis Scott, whom Lempel introduced as the brand’s new strategic creative partner.

The slogan “Play Has No Limits” had accompanied the PS5 since June 2020, when Sony showed the console’s design and the first games. On September 16, 2020, the company confirmed the dates: November 12 in markets such as the United States, Japan and Australia, and November 19 in the rest of the world, including Brazil.

What came next

Two weeks after launch, Sony celebrated the biggest launch in PlayStation history, ahead of the PS4’s 2.1 million units over the same period. The chip shortage kept the console hard to find until 2023, but sales stayed strong: 50 million units in December 2023 and 95 million in June 2026.
