Come along, because this story is one of the funniest of the generation: when Microsoft revealed the Xbox Series X’s vertical shape, the internet quickly compared the console to a little fridge. The meme caught on so much that Microsoft itself joined the joke, and in October 2020, a few weeks before launch, it began sending real fridges in the console’s shape to some personalities and content creators.
Look at this cute detail: the fridge imitated the Series X’s look on the outside, had a handle where the disc slot would be, green light inside and even played the Xbox startup sound. Few units were made. Some went to famous people like rapper Snoop Dogg and YouTuber iJustine, and others became prizes in giveaways.
YouTuber Jenna Ezarik also showed hers on her channel:
For latecomers: the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S were launched on November 10, 2020. The Series X, the more powerful model, cost US$ 499 in the United States and was designed to run games at 4K and 60 frames per second. The Series S, digital-only and all white, came out at US$ 299, focused on 1440p.
What came next
The joke worked so well it became a product. In March 2021, Dwayne Johnson handed out smaller fridges shaped like the Series X to promote his energy drink, as a trial run for Microsoft. In April, followers of the official Xbox account helped the brand win a Twitter voting contest, and Microsoft confirmed it would produce the Xbox Series X Mini Fridge for sale. It was announced at E3 2021, opened for pre-order in October 2021 and was planned to ship that December in North America and Europe. What a cute ending for a meme, right?
