Come with me and I’ll tell you: on August 19, 2019, in the middle of gamescom in Cologne, Microsoft and The Coalition published the Gears 5 Story Trailer – Kait Unleashed, a new trailer dedicated to the campaign. Until then, those waiting for the game had seen very little of the story, and this video brought one more piece of what awaited Kait Diaz.
The official description sums up the mood: with the war spreading, Kait breaks away from the group to uncover her connection to the enemy and realizes that the true danger to Sera is herself. Aw, my little gamer heart! In Gears 5, the protagonist is Kait, voiced in English by Laura Bailey. She was already a central piece in Gears of War 4, and now The Coalition was shifting the focus from JD Fenix to her. Rod Fergusson, head of the studio, explained the choice by comparing the previous game to Mad Max: Fury Road: “It was really Furiosa’s story, and Max was the partner.”
On this journey, she travels with her friend Del Walker and with Jack, the little robot created by Baird, which can be upgraded throughout the campaign with abilities such as scanning enemies, making the squad invisible and creating an energy shield. Look what a cute little helper! The campaign also featured open areas to explore on foot or aboard the Skiff, a vehicle in the game.
Gears 5 was set for September 10, 2019 on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Those with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or who bought the Ultimate Edition could start four days earlier, on September 6.
What came next
The game received “generally favorable” reviews on Metacritic, with praise for the gameplay, the campaign and the amount of content, and criticism of the story and the lack of novelty. In the first weekend, 3 million people played, the biggest Xbox Game Pass launch to that point. In December 2020 the Hivebusters expansion arrived.
