Numbers first: in May 2019, Ubisoft presented the financial report for its fiscal year ended in March, and the document brought a package of information about the company’s main games. The headline was Far Cry 5, which Ubisoft pointed to as its best-selling game of that console generation.
The report’s highlights:
- The company planned to release three big-budget games, so-called AAA, by March 2020.
- Skull and Bones, a naval battle game set in the age of pirates, was delayed once more.
- Far Cry 5 was Ubisoft’s best-selling game of the generation.
- Rainbow Six Siege had reached 45 million players.
- The Division 2 sold below expectations on consoles, but on PC, via Uplay, sales were ten times higher than those of the first game.
Translating the jargon: Far Cry 5, released on March 27, 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, was the fastest launch in the franchise’s history, with US$ 310 million in revenue in its first week. The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, dominated by Joseph Seed’s apocalyptic cult, and the player takes the role of a rookie cop tasked with freeing the region.
What came next
Far Cry 5 passed 10 million units sold by March 2020. The series carried on with the spin-off Far Cry New Dawn, which had already come out in February 2019, and with Far Cry 6, in October 2021. Skull and Bones, for its part, became a famous case of turbulent development: announced at E3 2017, it was delayed several times and only arrived on 16 February 2024, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with mixed reviews. In practice, this means the delay mentioned in this report was just the start of a long line.
