Listen up, sailor: in April 2019 Rare announced that Sea of Thieves would get, for free, a real campaign. It was called Tall Tales – Shores of Gold, a series of story missions designed to be played in a group with your crew. The debut was set for April 30, 2019, within the Anniversary Update, the game’s one-year update.

To understand why this was big news: Sea of Thieves came out in March 2018 for Xbox One and PC and was one of Microsoft’s first games to arrive straight on Xbox Game Pass. Critics liked the ship combat, the visuals and the water physics, but complained a lot about progression and the lack of content. Many people said there was no reason to keep sailing after a few sessions.

The Anniversary Update came precisely to answer that, and it arrived in style. Besides the Tall Tales, which work with clue books, riddles and mission items that take the crew from island to island, the package brought the Arena, a competitive mode in which several teams fight for silver on smaller maps, and The Hunter’s Call, a new trading company with fishing and cooking. Ship damage also became more detailed, with the mast, capstan and even the helm able to break.

What came next

The update was so big that part of the press treated it as a relaunch, and IGN even said it was the perfect time to give the game a second chance. Rare kept going with constant updates and new Tall Tales, and then came free themed expansions: A Pirate’s Life, based on Pirates of the Caribbean, in June 2021, and The Legend of Monkey Island, in July 2023. The game reached Steam in June 2020 and PlayStation 5 on 30 April 2024, and passed 40 million players by April that year. For anyone who likes playing with friends, it is still going strong.
