After years of rumors and speculation, WhatsApp vice president Chris Daniels confirmed that the app will start showing ads between Status playbacks. The company says this will be its main form of monetization. Rumors that the company intended to use some form of monetization are old and were the main reason for the departure of the company’s creators, Brian Acton and Jan Koum, after the purchase by Facebook. Brian disagreed with the app’s monetization plans, even going as far as regretting selling the app to Facebook.
In 2012, Brian published a post on the WhatsApp blog titled “Why we don’t sell ads,” in which he was emphatic in his argument, saying “when advertising is involved you the user are the product.” Reading that, it is clear what vision the founding duo of WhatsApp had, and it is easy to see what drove both of them away after the purchase by Facebook: the company intended to monetize the app.
It has not yet been said when advertising will start appearing in the app, but reports suggest that ads will begin to appear in 2019.
