Mafia III, by Hangar 13, published by 2K in 2016, is set in New Bordeaux, a fictional version of New Orleans in the late 1960s. You are Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran who returns home and sees his adoptive family wiped out by the Italian mob. From there, he builds a new “family” and sets out for revenge, taking over the territory of the responsible mobsters neighborhood by neighborhood.

Dead by Daylight, by Canada’s Behaviour Interactive, is asymmetric multiplayer horror: one player is the killer and four are survivors, who must repair generators and escape before being caught. The game came out on PC in June 2016 and reached PS4 and Xbox One a year later, in June 2017.

The bonuses also deserve a mention. Here They Lie is a first-person horror game for PS VR, set in a nightmare city full of strange creatures. Knowledge is Power is a PlayLink trivia game, Sony’s line in which your phone becomes the controller through an app.

What came next

Dead by Daylight became one of the longest-lasting online horror games of the generation, with licensed killers from films and series, and in November 2023 Behaviour announced 60 million players across all platforms. PS Plus changed too: the original service became PS Plus Essential, with the Extra and Premium tiers above it.
