Check out the July 2018 lineup: on June 28, Microsoft revealed the month’s Games with Gold, the games Xbox Live Gold subscribers could claim at no extra cost. It was a good month for those who like playing together on the couch and for those who like fighting games.
The list, with the claim periods:
- Assault Android Cactus (Xbox One), throughout July
- Death Squared (Xbox One), July 16 to August 15
- Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (Xbox 360), July 1 to 15
- Splinter Cell Conviction (Xbox 360), July 16 to 31
The two Xbox 360 games ran on Xbox One through backward compatibility.
Assault Android Cactus is a twin-stick shooter from the Australian studio Witch Beam, released on PC in 2015: you control an android who must clear a ship taken over by robots, alone or with up to four people on the same couch. It is frantic, with bullets all over the screen, just the way arcades like it. Death Squared, from fellow Australian studio SMG Studio, from 2017, is a cooperative puzzle game for 1, 2 or 4 players: each one guides a robot to the exit of its color, in a setting full of traps, and without talking nobody clears a level. Guaranteed arguments among friends.
On the Xbox 360 side, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is the definitive version of Sega AM2’s classic 3D fighting game, the series that back in 1993 inaugurated polygon fighting in arcades. For those who like technical fighting, reading and frame data, it is a lesson. And Splinter Cell Conviction, from 2010, brings Sam Fisher in a faster, more aggressive adventure than the previous ones, with the mechanic of marking and executing enemies in sequence.
What came next
Witch Beam later became known for Unpacking, from 2021, the moving-in unpacking game that won many awards. Games with Gold ended on September 14, 2023, when Xbox Live Gold became Xbox Game Pass Core. Xbox 360 games that were claimed stayed with players forever; Xbox One ones now require an active subscription.
