Niantic announces trading and a friendship system in Pokémon GO

Niantic announced trading and friendships for Pokémon GO on June 18, 2018, with trainer codes, gifts and Stardust-based trades.

It was reported today (06/18) on the official Pokémon GO website that this week’s update will introduce several new mechanics (wanted by every Pokémon master for over a year), all extremely influential on the game’s competitiveness. Here is the list.

  • Every player will have a trainer code, and they can be exchanged between players to be added to their friends lists.
  • Friendships can level up, which will generate benefits in battles and Raids; fighting together will raise the friendship level.
  • PokéStops can drop gifts that can only be opened by gifting them to another player; the gifts can contain useful battle items and eggs which, when hatched, can yield Alolan-form Kanto Pokémon, plus a postcard from the region where the gift was picked up.
  • The trading feature will be available between players (FINALLY!), but only between players of level 10+, and the players must be at close levels (not defined in the official news) and every trade will be based on spending Stardust.
  • Traded Pokémon will receive Candy bonuses; the greater the regional difference between the Pokémon, the bigger the bonus.
  • Legendary, shiny and unregistered-in-your-Pokédex Pokémon can only be traded once a day and with a high friendship level.
  • The higher the players’ friendship, the lower the Stardust cost for trades, and each trade will raise the friendship level between them.

Pokémon trainers and masters, get ready to complete the Pokédex!
