PlayStation 4 firmware update is live

Sony released PS4 firmware 5.53, a roughly 440MB update listed as performance and stability improvements, and reportedly mandatory for online play.

Version 5.53 is now available…

Sony released a new firmware update for the PlayStation on Thursday (12th) morning. The download size is approximately 440MB. The changelog mentions only system performance and stability improvements. Even though no major changes are listed in the log, those who have had access to the kernel claim that this update fixes potential risks left by version 5.50 – released in early March.

In any case, if you have a PS4 and want to keep playing online, this update is mandatory.

As mentioned above, the last major update released for the PlayStation 4 was 5.50, after extensive beta testing. That update introduced several changes to the system, from library tweaks and play time management (parental controls) to the ability to import images to the PS4 and use them as a theme.
