Numbers first: two reveals, two games, one magazine. An issue of the Japanese magazine V Jump released in February 2018 brought news for both Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball FighterZ, showing that Bandai Namco had not abandoned either.
In Xenoverse 2, the highlight was Goku in the “perfected” Ultra Instinct form, the same one that was a hit in the anime Dragon Ball Super. The magazine described the special move “Hiken,” an automatic dodge as the character’s trait, and the finishing move “Shin Etsu Enbu.” Alongside him came Fu, the mysterious character original to the franchise’s games, with a new story chapter centered on him.
Classic Japanese blurb, full of pomp and kanjiIn FighterZ, V Jump confirmed the rumor of Broly and Bardock as playable fighters via DLC. Broly’s level 3 super is called “Gigantic Meteor”; Bardock’s, “Revenger Assault,” in which he turns Super Saiyan for a sequence of strikes. The release date was left to be revealed the following month.
Translating the jargon for those who don’t follow: Xenoverse 2 is the action RPG in which you create your own character and travel through the series’ timeline; FighterZ is Arc System Works’ 3-on-3 fighting game, released in January 2018. Both depended on paid content to stay alive.
What came next
The Xenoverse 2 pack became Extra Pack 2, “Infinite History”, released on February 28, 2018, with four characters: Ultra Instinct Goku, Jiren, Super version Android 17 and Fu, plus a new story chapter, five parallel quests, eight skills and eight super souls. Broly and Bardock, meanwhile, arrived in FighterZ as part of the FighterZ Pass, which had eight characters in total.
And you, who would you like to see in the roster? Is there room for Master Roshi? In practice, Bandai Namco’s answer was a DLC list that only kept growing in the following years.
