It was already announced that Sea of Thieves will not have loot boxes, only cosmetic microtransactions. RARE also guaranteed that all extra content added to the game will be completely free.
The game also has no Season Pass or DLC packs, since all content added later will be free (just as is done in Halo 5), for all Sea of Thieves players. A decision made by the devs and the studio so as not to divide the community between those who have the extra content and those who don’t.
Joe Neate, executive producer of Sea of Thieves, talks more about the update system, after IGN’s visit to RARE:
“I look at updates through two lenses: one is for the most engaged players, and what material can we deliver to those guys? That gives you new goals, new things to achieve for the most engaged. The people in the ‘middle bucket’ who are just having fun and progressing at their own pace, we’ll add new types of missions, new things to do in general that create emergent gameplay. Fishing, for example, is a great thing that would fit into that if we decide to add it; you could bring in a new trading company that could give you new goals to achieve, you could go and get some rare exclusive things. That would be the kind of thing that benefits everyone. I want to bring updates that cater to both types of players.”
The game will also have temporary events and other things to keep players active. There could be an NPC in a tavern one weekend with some fun, time-limited missions for some exclusive things.
It was also revealed that there will be events to increase the frequency of sharks for a day, add more storms, raise the tides. And even white flags for surrender and other kinds of signals. RARE’s idea is that these kinds of events are inserted in the middle of the bigger updates, to keep the world of Sea of Thieves buzzing and busy.
Sea of Thieves launches on March 20, 2018.
