Come along, because this news is a little gift: between November 17 and 20, 2017, Blizzard made Overwatch free for those who had not yet bought the game. The free weekend applied to all platforms the game existed on at the time, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and needed no special code. You just had to download it and join the fun.
Check out how cute the list of what was unlocked was: quick play, Arcade mode, custom games and practice against artificial intelligence. Only Competitive mode was left out, reserved for those who already owned the game. And all 26 heroes in the roster at the time were available to try, each with their own style and abilities.
A very sweet detail for those who liked the experience: all progress made over the weekend, with levels and cosmetic items earned, was saved in case the person decided to buy the game later. No starting from scratch!
For those who don’t know it, Overwatch is Blizzard’s team shooter, released on May 24, 2016, in which two teams of six heroes fight over objectives on maps around the world, with heroes from various countries, including the Brazilian Lúcio. At the time of the free weekend, the game had already passed 35 million players, and it had accumulated Game of the Year awards, such as the one at The Game Awards 2016.
What came next
Overwatch also got a Nintendo Switch version on October 15, 2019. On October 3, 2022, the original game’s servers were shut down, and the next day, October 4, Overwatch 2 arrived, replacing the first game and becoming free for everyone. My little gamer heart says that free weekend in 2017 was a rehearsal for what was to come.
