Check it out, virtual soccer crowd: EA’s official games distributor in Brazil brought news about FIFA 18, and the main one is that Alex Hunter, the story mode’s protagonist, will be dropping by here. The second season of The Journey, named Hunter Returns, takes the English player to new places, and Brazil is among them, alongside the United States.

But there is a catch: you won’t be able to transfer Hunter to a Brazilian Championship club, since no team from here is fully officially licensed in the game. According to the announcement, his career goes through one team in each of the leagues unlocked in the mode: Los Angeles Galaxy, from Major League Soccer, PSG, from Ligue 1, Atlético de Madrid, from LaLiga, and Bayern Munich, from the Bundesliga.

For those who play with Portuguese audio, another confirmation: the narration continues with Tiago Leifert, with commentary by Caio Ribeiro, the duo that had already been the voice of Brazilian FIFA for a few seasons.

For those who just arrived: Alex Hunter is an 18-year-old from Clapham, in London, and The Journey debuted in FIFA 17 as the series’ first story mode. In Hunter Returns, the plot also features appearances by real players such as Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann.

What came next

FIFA 18 came out on September 29, 2017 for Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with Cristiano Ronaldo on the cover. The game used the Frostbite engine, except on the older consoles and Switch versions, and brought Ultimate Team Icons, previously Xbox-exclusive under the name Legends, to PS4 and PC. It arrived with a bang: with more than 24 million copies sold by the end of 2018, it became the best-selling FIFA ever. The online servers were shut down in 2023: on February 14 for Switch, PS3 and Xbox 360, and on November 6 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
