Come with me, this one is for anyone who loves watching cars crumple realistically: BeamNG.drive, the driving and physics simulator that has been a PC favorite for years, arrived on PlayStation 5 on Monday, October 19, in Early Access, together with the v0.40 update for the Steam version.
The heart of the game is soft-body physics: every component of a vehicle is simulated in real time, so crashes look spectacular and the damage model is extremely detailed. There are dozens of vehicles, from compact cars to huge trucks, and you can tweak wheels, suspension, engines and many other parts.
What is on PS5
Here is a sweet touch: the console version launches with local split-screen, so you can drive with someone on the same couch. There are 12 open-world maps, with tropical jungle, desert, city boulevards and highways, plus Free Roam, where you can change wind speed and even gravity, a Career Mode that takes you from a beater to a luxury fleet (or a fleet of rust buckets, if that is what your heart wants), and scenarios such as truck deliveries, police chases and time trials.
The v0.40 update, out on PC and PS5 at the same time, adds a new vehicle, split-screen, and support for FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 on the base PS5 and PSSR on PS5 Pro.
Price and mods
On PS5 the game costs $24.99, the same as on PC, according to BeamNG. One important note: mods will not be supported on PlayStation at launch, and mod authoring tools are not currently planned for the console. Both versions will keep getting updates.
